Labour Force Survey

Every month, a team of field interviewers employed by
the Australian Bureau of Statistics (the ABS) contact
27,000 households and ask a series of questions about
the age and labour market activities of their member.
Working-age population is the total number of
civilians aged 15 years and over.
The working-age population is divided into those in the
labour force and those not in the labour force.
Labour force is the number of people employed plus
the number unemployed.
The survey counts as employed all persons who, during
the week before the survey:
1.Worked at least 1 hour as an employee or in a family
business or farm.
2.Were not working but who had jobs from which they
were temporarily absent.

For unemployed:
1.Had no employment
2.Were available for work, and either:
1. Had actively looked for a job during the previous four
weeks, or
2.Were waiting to start a new job within the
next four weeks.
